Background: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease resulting from the damage of
pancreatic ߚ-cells because of autoreactive CD4+ and CD8+ T cells activation. In recent years, follicular
T helper (Tfh) cells have been recognized as a subpopulation of CD4+ T cells providing help for B cells
differentiation and antibody production. So far, several studies have been investigated the role of
circulating Tfh cells in autoimmune diseases. In this study, we examined the frequency of circulating
TfH cells and aglutamic acid decarboxylase autoantibodies (GAD65) and islet cell autoantibodies
(ICA) serum level in childeren with type I diabetes.
Methods: We analyzed the percentage of TfH cells within peripheral blood mononuclear cells in T1D
patients (≤ 300 days from disease onset; n=20; Mean age 6.8 ± 4.6 years) and healthy individuals
(n=18; Mean age 8.8 ± 2.2 years) by flowcytometry. Anti-GAD and islet cell autoantibodies (ICA) level
were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and indirect
immunofluorescence (IF) respectively.
Results: We found that the frequency of CD4+CXCR5+ and CD4+CXCR5+ICOS+ Tfh cells were
increased significantly in the peripheral blood of patients, compared with that of healthy controls (P<
0.0001); Furthermore, an increased level of Anti-GAD and ICA was seen in Patients compared to
controls (P=0.001 and P=0.02 respectively). There was no correlation between TfH cells frequency
and the autoantibody levels.
Conclusion: Our results demonstrated the possible involvement of TfH cells in T1D and suggest that
TfH cells could be considered as a therapeutic target in type 1 diabetes.

The Congress Reporting Form
How many volunteers were present at the Congress? : over 4,000 participants from almost 70 countries
Delegates from which countries presented in the congress? : USA, Canada, Austria, Switzerland, Iran, India,
Were the delegates of any other organizations present in the congress? : Yes
If yes, please write the names of the organizations in the box : IUIS
What were the responses to your talking points? Were specific questions or concerns raised? : I had a poster presentation. the delegates stopped on my poster and asked questions. our results about TFH cells in diabetes patients were interesting for people working on the TFH cells.
If you met staff members, please list their full names & positions. : No, I have attended sessions talking on MS and other autoimmune diseases. I just asked some questions about my work from professors with common interests.
Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress : no thanks. International Congress of Immunology held on every 3 years in different countries in the world with high scientific level. The congress is usually scheduled for 5 or 6 days and
different sessions of meeting are planned for different audiences such as plenary lectuers, workshops, lunchtime lectures and so on.Attending these congresses is very helpful gaining motivation to work hard and better. University supporting of academic staff would be very useful for participation scientific meetings and improvement our works. Obviously, we also need financial support, equipped labs and better access to articles to do valuable works.
Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : There was not any problem for providing ticket but not having a credit card was a problem for booking hotel and paying registration fee.
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : The main themes for ICI 2016 were “Immunotherapy: Harnessing the Power of the Immune System”, (new immunotherapeutic strategies for treatment of cancer, autoimmunity, allergy and immune deficiencies and transplant outcomes), Advances in discovery and development of vaccines for infectious diseases , fields of microbiome-host interactions, new innate cell subsets and immunoregulatory pathways. Over 100 Invited Speakers and 180 Chairs from all over the world have attended. 50% of these are women. The program included >800 oral presentations , >60 mini-symposia and Poster sessions . Pre-Congress update course in Basic Immunology or Clinical Immunology imparted by world leaders, who will provide overviews on the latest developments in basic research and clinical treatments. the ICI app was very helpful for providing congress news and program.
