Abstract(Please copy/paste the abstract send to the congress) : 1-Urinary Schistosomiasis in Iran: has elimination been achieved?

According to WHO more than 600 million people are at risk of schistosomiasis worldwide. Most of these groups are at risk of urinary schistosomiasis causing by Schistosoma haematobium which is prevalent in 53 countries in Africa and in the Middle East including Khuzestan province southwestern Iran. In epidemic periods, 400 villages in the area have been observed infected, with the highest rate of 8.3 %( 40,000-50,000 infected individuals) in 1970. Aiming to interruption of infection transmission, the national program was implemented using a combination of control measures such as case finding, mass treatment, snail control and environmental sanitation. The number of egg passers reduced gradually from 1600 in 100,000 urine samples before the year 1976, to 2 cases in 1998 out of the same sample size. The last confirmed case was seen in 2001. In current condition possible declaration of elimination of bilharziasis in Iran has been regarded by health authorities in the country. New surveillance plan which is concentrated on Integrated Health System is being revised based on the present situation. On the verge of elimination of the disease in the country, along with implementation of modern diagnostic techniques, threatening factors such as the possibility of imported infection from the neighboring country, Iraq, and continual monitoring of snail habitats should be taken into account.

Recent Paleoparasitological discoveries in Iran
Paleoparasitology demonstrates the status of ancient parasitic infections in the far past. This young interdisciplinary line of research has recently attracted the attention of parasitologists in Iran. Along with the elimination of some parasitic infections such as malaria, urinary schistosomiasis and dracontiasis in the country, paleoparasitological data sheds light on hidden corners of disease elimination process over the time and space. Discoveries of mummified remains in Chehrabad archeological site have resulted to the first paleoparasitological findings in rodent and canine coprolites in Iran including Syphacia sp., Trichuris sp., Trichosomoides crassicauda and Macracanthorhynchus hirudinaceus respectively. Dicrocoelium dendriticum egg found in a Bronze Age (2600–2200 BC) cemetery, southwestern the country, was another occasion for Iranian parasitologist. During a civil water and sewage construction project in the south of Tehran near the city’s Grand Bazaar a sensational finding of a female adolescent skeleton evaluated to be 7000 years old offered an opportunity to detect the oldest pinworm infection in the Asian continent. Regarding the current zoogeographical situation in Iran which has provided a vast range of possibilities to many parasites to encounter humans and animals through their life cycles in present time, expectation of finding the various parasites in the past will arise. Shahr-e Sukhteh is an archaeological site of Bronze Age located in the southeastern Iran however, is another ongoing paleoparasitological investigation. Along with the classical laboratory methods, setting up the molecular techniques based on aDNA extraction, is regarded as a priority in the country.

The Congress Reporting Form
How many volunteers were present at the Congress? : 250 participants
Delegates from which countries presented in the congress? : mostly European countries. In addition with USA, Brazil, Argentina, and African countries such as Egypt, Libya and Tunisia. From the Asia, Japan, South Korea and many other countries.Countries like, turkey,India, finland,Sweden,Germany,France, purteghal,England,Denmark,Australia, South Africa and so................................
Were the delegates of any other organizations present in the congress? : No
If yes, please write the names of the organizations in the box :
What were the responses to your talking points? Were specific questions or concerns raised? : The questions were upon the reasons that we present for the elimination of Urinary Schistosomiasis from Iran. In the other session of mine entitled Recent Paleoparasitological findings in Iran, the participants from European countries were exited and their questions were upon the capability of the current research in Iran. The answers were very satisfying to them.
If you met staff members, please list their full names & positions. : Jean Dopouy Camet from France. Santiago Mas Coma from Spain. Riitta Saari , one of the congress staff.Jose Carlos Sousa-Figueiredo. M.Dolores Bargues.Jerome Boissier.Filip Volckaert.Camilla J.L. Eldridge
Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress : I think at this level there is no need to communicate more with them as Iranian Society of Parasitology is well engaged with authorities of the congress........................................................................................................................................................................
Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : Comparing with the other countries I and my colleagues faced to very hard situations, concerning the visa process and economy. But the most important issue that suffers us as TUMS academic staff with presenting 2 lectures, for instance, and chairing the pannel in a case for me, is the great difference between the coverage of travel expense fromTUMS which is very low and other Iranian research centers and Universities which are significantly more..................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : It is always a very interesting scientific occasion that could not be attained ever without the active participation in international congresses. I personally, prefer to pay for this types of travel instead of expend my few amount of money for other personal needs which might have been more accepted to general people . With this opportunities the level of knowledge and research values will grow . Having an overview from the current international level in the field of parasitology, will help us to change and/or correct our attitudes toward writing research proposals . In this congress I simply understood that our new field of research (paleoparasitology) is looks important in the mind of European researchers
