Information of Congress
Title of the Congress : 9th IWA Eastern European Conference for Young Water Professionals
Title of your Abstract : Analysis of water treatment performance for Giardia parasite by Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment
Destination Country : Hungary
From : Tuesday, May 23, 2017
To : Sunday, May 28, 2017
Abstract(Please copy/paste the abstract send to the congress) : Background and objectives: Giardia has been proposed as reference organism in water treatment systems by EPA. In this work, to be in compliance with EPA requirements, the performance of a water treatment plant (WTP) (Jalaliyeh WTP in Tehran) was examined using a Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA) tool.
Method: The pathogen density was analyzed using EPA 1623.1 method. The treatment performance was determined by monitoring of pathogens before and after three treatment steps (including pre-settling, coagulation and flocculation, filtration) then the magnitude of the exposure to the pathogen via drinking water consumption was estimated. The estimated infection risk and the burden of disease were determined and compared with health-based targets, i.e. 10-6 DALYs per person per year.
Results: The amounts of removal and inactivation of Giardia in Jalaliyeh WTP were determined to be 2.4 and 3.3 log, respectively. Out of fifteen monthly samples one sample was found positive for threated drinking water. The estimated burden of disease due to the presence of Giardia in produced water for age groups of less than 2, 2 to 6, 6 to 16 and older than 16 years were 1.91×10-9, 2.09×10-9, 4.93×10-10 and 5.24×10-9 DALYs per person per year, respectively.
Conclusions: comparison of the estimated burden of disease with target show despite the detection of pathogen in treated water there is no health concern about Giardia in the produced drinking water of Jalaliyeh WTP. Disinfection with chlorine had the main role for lowering the risk of infection in this system. As the first QMRA study in Iran, this tool is able effectively to identify the vulnerabilities of treatment system and to facilitate decision-making in order to improve water treatment system performance. Implementation of this tool in the context of Water Safety Plan (WSP) framework in order to improve the performance of water treatment systems in countries where transmission of water borne disease by water supply systems is probable could be recommended.

Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : I was provided our ticket from Turkish airline. It was a good airline. For accommodation I was booked a hotel by Booking.com and paid in cash at the hotel. There was no any problem and everything was OK.
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : The conference had been held by a team comprised from different young water professions from different countries most of them from central European countries. As I know International Water Association, a well-known association in UK invests in Young Water Professionals, by empowering them within the association and the water sector. Young members will be able to build their career in this network, by connecting and contributing (work with peers internationally) to the water sector, and through this build their network, develop professionally, and gain profile. This conference was 9th conference which held by young water professionals in Budapest, Hungary. The atmosphere of conference was scientific and friendly. Many topics related to water works and, engineering and science were presented. Some of topics very new and interesting for me. These new topics encouraged me to define some new research topics in our research center. I am going to work on them.
