1.Brief summary of Leave : |
The main task of this sabbatical leave was to prepare biological data of fly, Lucilia sericata, as a model for future works on other Iranian fly species which are important in forensic investigations. The results are useful and applicable to estimate post mortem interval in crime scenes. Visit of the activities of that university in the field of forensic entomology, discussing about some new ideas in this field, engage in collaborative research project(s) in this field, submission of a manuscript and visit of Krakow University for learning the methods of wing geometry of flies were the other activities in Poland. |
2.List the objectives of your sabbatical leave as listed in your proposal and indicate how completely they were met : |
1- Prepare life tables for Lucilia seriacata as a model for future works on other species such as Chrysomyia albiceps, Calliphora vicina (Diptera: Calliphoridae), and Sarcophaga argyrostoma (Diptera: Sarcophagidae). Data of biological studies on the fly, L. sericata, is sufficient for analyzing and preparing of a life table which is the duration of each developmental stages which has shown in main report. 2- Prepare Isomegalen and Isomorphen curves for one of the aforementioned species such as Lucilia seriacata. Based on biological studies on the fly, L. sericata, these kinds of graphs have been prepared and showed in main report. 3- Participate in research activities at the Nicolaus Copernicus University. In duration of this sabbatical period, it was a good chance to accompany with Prof. K. Szpila and other staff of that department in their studies. The key information required for estimating of the Post-mortem interval (PMI) is to prepare life tables, isomegalen and isomorphen curves for each of the main flies on human cadavers in Iran. The main dipteran species on human cadavers in Iran are C. albiceps, L. seriacata, C. vicina and S. argyrostoma. To gather these basic data we have to prepare a colony of each species. For preparing of life table and Isomegalen and Isomorphen curves it has been placed batch of synchronized eggs in incubators in constant temperature 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32 and 34 degree centigrade. Samplings were done at each 4 hours. Larval samples preserved in EtOH 70%. Measuring was done by means of a digital caliper and recorded for each sampling separately. Statistical analysis has been done by R software. To find how to identify the forensically important flies with the shape of their wings, to software of related analysis, Idetifly and MorphoJ, have been seen and learnt how to use. It was a good chance to take part and have a lecture in international workshop “Forensically Important Diptera: Identification Workshop” which has been conducted jointly by Nicolaus Copernicus University and European Association for Forensic Entomology at Sept 17 – 21, 2018. Title of the lecture was “Maggot Therapy, Old Idea, New Approach”. |
3.Acheivements(Publications,research,et.al.) : |
Brief results of the studies in sabbatical were included: to find a kind of life table for minimum duration of each developmental stage, to prepare isomegalen diagram, to prepare isomorphen diagram, to find zero developmental temperature for each stage, to prepare degree day, to find how to identify forensically important flies with wing shape, to submit a manuscript, to discuss for future works, take part and have a lecture in the workshop about identification forensically important flies The results of this study will be submitted soon in a good journal as a good paper in this field for the first time for Iran. The paper will be prepared and submitted as a joint paper with colleagues of Nicolaus Copernicus University. |
4.Assessment of Value of Sabbatical leave(benefits,faculty development,future professional activities,...) : |
All studies in field of forensic sciences have a great importance due to the nature of this filed. The result of each study could be a reference for future works and can be affect results of investigations in crime scene subsequently in judgments. It is cleared that this filed of research should be done under supervisions of experts either in methods or in special statistical analysis. Our knowledge in forensic entomology is so young and is a gap in the field of forensic sciences. In the field of forensic entomology applicable biological data should be derived in standard conditions to be useful and trustable. The most important data which can be used in forensic investigations are isomegalen and isomorphen diagrams as well as degree day for developmental stages. These data for Iranian species of forensically important flies has done for the first time in this study. Iranian strain of the fly species Luclilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae) has been taken for this study as a model for learning how to prepare the experiment conditions, the materials needed, the sampling procedures, the methods of preserving, proper and accurate measurements, data processing, data analyzing, describing and defining of the results, how to use the results in crime scenes. This method has been found and described in final results. This study will be a model for future works on other forensically important flies of Iran as remained in previous section. Discussions with the colleagues of Nicolaus Copernicus University were positive and they showed their interests to cooperate with the team of forensic entomology in department of Medical Entomology and Vector Control and other Iranian researchers for future works. Presence of a memorandum which has been signed at 2014 between School of Public Health and Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection would be simplified these collaborations. |
