The Asia Pacific Medical Education Conference has grown and strengthened over the years. It is now in its 17th year attracting participants, not only from the Asia-Pacific region but also from around the globe. For APMEC 2020, about 1600 medical and healthcare professionals from over 38 countries had participated. The general demographic of the participants consisted of academic staff in fields of basic sciences, clinical medicine, dentistry, pharmacy as well as medical students from different countries. The APMEC conference provided a complex mixture of plenary speeches, symposia, workshops, free and short communication. While it allows for an extensive list of options for participants with different interests and expertise, selecting appropriate sessions was challenging. The focus of the conference this year was to share and discuss the best approaches to face challenges and develop solutions to mitigate shortcomings in educating and training the next generation of healthcare professionals. It is to my belief that APMEC is a potential platform to share our experiences as educators and learn the latest innovations and best practices adopted internationally from experts in medical education and healthcare professional practice. Attending this conference is also an opportunity for participants to discuss innovative approaches and novel concepts in medical and health professional education with experts. I attended the plenary sessions, in which professor Harden and professor Norcini presented different topics in continuity in medical education and implementation of life long learning in the educational system. I believe that these sessions have helped me in determining a course for future research at our university. I also presented a short communication considering the results of a national multicenter survey that our team performed to attain Iranian medical students’ perspectives regarding their interest in different medical specialties. When reflecting on the results of our study, there seems to be a dire need for us to consider implementing career planning courses into the undergraduate medical curriculum to encourage our students towards opting currently less favored but critically necessary specialties. In conclusion, I believe that the main benefits of attending such conferences could be summarized in the following points. First, the attendance of academic staff and students in these sorts of events provides an invaluable opportunity to learn the best practices from the very best experts and frontiers in the field of medical education. Second, by presenting our works on an international level competition, we have the chance to introduce our university and its potentials to the international community. Third, attending these events provides the opportunity to establish links with researchers around the globe and perform international projects. This year TUMS Participated with one faculty member (Dr. khabaz Mafinejad) and one medical student (me) in APMEC 2020, which is the only team from an Iranian university in this well-known international meeting in Asia level. When compared to the total number of faculty members and students in TUMS and also in comparison with other countries show a significant deficit in our representation in such an educational meeting. The high cost of the conference, especially registration fees and difficulties in getting visa Singapore embassies in Iran, could be considered as the main challenges which Iranian delegates faced.
