Background: Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (RAS) is a common oral inflammatory disease with unknown pathogenesis. Although the immune system alterations could be involved in predisposition of individuals to oral candidiasis, precise ethiologies of RAS have not been understood yet. Considering the inflammatory nature of interleukin (IL)-17F and RAS, we aimed to sequence the gene in a number of patients with RAS to identify any disease-associated mutation.
Methods: Sixty-two Iranian patients with RAS and fifty healthy subjects enrolled in this study. After DNA extraction from the whole blood, amplification was accomplished by polymerase chain reaction for IL-17F.
Results: The results of sequencing revealed a missense, heterozygous mutation, converting a threonine to proline in a patient with RAS. The Poly-phen software suggested a damaging probability predicting this substitution to have a harmful effect on IL-17F protein function. Nevertheless, this substitution was predicted not to change the β-aggregation propensity using TANGO software. Such mutation was not detected in any control subject.
Conclusion: This is a first study showing a mutation that seems to be associated with susceptibility to RAS. Further studies on more patients with RAS are required to confirm this finding.

The Congress Reporting Form
How many volunteers were present at the Congress? : There is no exact data but I think they were almost 400 people
Delegates from which countries presented in the congress? : European Union, Middle east, US
Were the delegates of any other organizations present in the congress? : No
If yes, please write the names of the organizations in the box :
What were the responses to your talking points? Were specific questions or concerns raised? : There were just one question from one of referees. He ask about our genetic population and the method used in the experiment. I clarified the subject and he accept my response. Overally, everything was good and I had a acceptable presentation among others
If you met staff members, please list their full names & positions. : no
Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress : I have no Idea because I did not met any faculty member because I just speak with jounior members like myself in the congress. I must add that most of the professors were clinician that my works did not related to them. I may suggest you to start following the EAACI or WAO associations becaise they have other meething and congresses during this year, For example, there is another EAACI congress in 2014 June at Denmark that you may could find some faculties there.
Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : I could win a travel grant up to 500 Euro which could cover a part of my expenses. The accomodation were free for me (As a travel grant winner) during the congress, but as I took an Iran air flight, I should wait for a week in Milan, so I reserved another hotel for staying. In addition I was exempt from the registration fee bacause of mentioned reason.
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : The congress was really amazing cause that was an international congress in a beautiful country. I had an opportunity to talk with other students around the world. We had a lot in common and I could find that they had some problems like lack of money or facilities. Broadly speaking, that was a great experience for a master student like me. I will certainly attend other congresses in Europe. These days, I am preparing for mentioned congress in Denmark. I may send two abstracts for them cause I believe they will accept them. Another important outcome of this trip was being familiar with how to prepare a foriegh travel. I am already familiar with VISA process, airline rules and some important points about our country rules about going abroad. So, now I can go to other congresses easily.
