SUMMARY: This paper discusses the trend and prospective of membranes application in water treatment and in particular the removal of fluoride.
Membrane along with adsorption process is considered as an effective process for rejection of various pollutants, including fluoride. The benefit of membrane over other effective process such as adsorption is that pathogens, parasites and other pollutants can be removed simultaneously. In addition the control of the breakpoint in adsorption process needs continuous monitoring of water quality and it needs special equipments for fluoride measurement. Although point of use (POU) application of domestic reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) are growing in some parts, it needs a common knowledge about the manufactures materials and operating actions. Energy power issue has been an obstacle for membrane wide spread. Although an official committee or authority can easily inform the families and help them for preparing such small devices as possible. Other abundant energy sources (such as solar and wind power) can encourage the development of membranes application for remote areas to purify waters with high fluoride and also high TDS contents. In general some economic analysis showed that fluoride removal using membrane can be affordable for some communities.
Keywords of your Abstract : fluoride mitigation, membrane process, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis.

Delegates from which countries presented in the congress? : Thailand, USA, India, Japan, Netherland, Sweden, China, Iran, Tanzania, Germany, New zealand, Malaysia,
Were the delegates of any other organizations present in the congress? : No
If yes, please write the names of the organizations in the box : -
What were the responses to your talking points? Were specific questions or concerns raised? : Discussions were around the simple and low cost methods for removal of fluoride from water. in general, it is obvious that simple local methods in many cases can mitigate fluoride from water.
If you met staff members, please list their full names & positions. : Bruce Spittle, fluorde journal editor
Please inform us if there are any follow up actions we need to talk with the members of the congress : The problem of fluoride intake through different materials (water, foods, additives, supplementary etc could arise adverse human health effects. International society for fluoride research attempts to develop the knowledge about the effect of fluoride on human health. In addition, different efficient methods of fluoride mitigation are considered. With regard to the importance of this issue, it is not only water resources cause the problem but also different materials can involve communities.
Accordingly, with regard to valuable experience of the fluoride society, a close relation could enhance the knowledge of fluoride concerns and mitigation strategies. Some known scientists such as Dr. B. Spittle and Professor Jörg Spitz could help a lot.

Your experiences about the travel processes(Providing ticket, accommodation,...) : No problem, the hotel was reserved in advance.
Please give a briefing of your own observations and outcomes of the congress: : In all cases, “prevention is prior to treatment”.
Observing the people suffering from the fluorosis was very oppressive; the experiences of applying local defluoridation actions were interesting. A school was equipped with a local water supply system in order to mitigate the fluoride concentrations. A kind of adsorption process incorporated with filtration methods was applied for this purpose. Such a system could serve not only the school but also serve a portion of the community using portable containers. An important point here is the problem of water shortage in some parts of the world especially middle east region and pollution of existing fresh waters by different pollutant such as industrial wastewaters. In that harsh situation the probability of presence of other pollutant is of concern. Therefore taking some actions for such a probable problem is very important.
