Department of Restorative Dentistry

This department have developed new concepts and techniques for treatment of severely damaged teeth by using biomaterials.

The departmental structure of the dental education program reflects a commitment to build strong bridges between the clinical practice and sciences in cariology, pulp biology, dental materials, preventive measures, operative, advanced restorative and esthetic dentistry.

It is an approach that is beneficial for training competent oral health care providers who will contribute meaningfully to provide oral health care, caries preventive procedures, minimally invasive restorative dentistry using different types of direct or indirect restorative materials therefore, it contributes in providing a multidisciplinary approach in the diagnosis and management of patients’ and functional esthetics needs.

Primary functions

·         To Educate undergraduate dental students with respect to cariology, caries diagnosis, novel dental materials and preventive measures and operative dentistry procedures including tooth filling with resin composite materials or glass ionomer cements or amalgam that all these can improve oral health care of patients

·

·         To train pre-doctoral students in research methodology and conducting a dissertation research thesis.

·         To educate Postgraduate students

During their didactic curriculum, post graduate students attendant:

-Cariology seminars

-Pulp biology and regeneration seminars

- Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ) and occlusion seminars,

-Tooth wear management seminars

-Advanced operative and restorative and esthetics-oriented classes

- Laboratory hands-on sessions

-Comprehensive evidence-based restorative and esthetic dentistry literature review

- multi-disciplinary oriented lectures including treatment planning seminars

-comprehensive evidence-based perio-implant literature review and prosthodontics treatment planning

Post graduate students achieved skills including simple to more extensive smile reconstruction including teeth whitening, direct composite restorations, porcelain laminate veneers, all-ceramic and porcelain-fused-to-metal restoration, computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) restorations, and implant-supported crowns and bridges.

Postgraduate student is also required to conduct an original research project as part of his/her preparation for the dissertation/thesis

Students learn treatment planning and record-keeping techniques that they apply to each patient. They are required to present such information in roundtable discussions with faculty members. The process enables students to develop effective management and administrative skills.

Graduates of the program have reported a real sense of satisfaction and enjoyment from their clinical work as well as a substantial increase in their confidence and an ability to manage challenging restorative dentistry cases that they would have been unable to attempt prior to the program.
