Introduction :

Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology is a branch and specialty of dentistry concerning the prescription, production and interpretation of diagnostic images for the diagnosis and management of oral and maxillofacial diseases.

The discipline of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology is actively engaged on undergraduate and graduate education and clinical and educational research activities. The identification and visualization of characteristic features of diseases and disorders of the craniofacial complex on both plain and advanced images is an area of continued teaching emphasis, research activity and publication.


History :

The department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology in Tehran university of medical sceince – international campus, was first established in 1389. Professor Zahra Ghoncheh has worked as the chairperson of the department from 2010 till now. In 2011, Dr Behrang Moghaddamzadeh was designated as the part-time assistant professor of the department. Dr Hanieh Kaviani started to work as an assistant professor in this department in 2011. In 2011four periapical radiographic devices were available in the department; afterwards, in october of 2012 a  Digital panoramic radiographic device was added to the facilities of this department.



The graduate program in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, established in 1390, stresses the importance of the design and analysis of imaging examinations as they pertain to the interpretation of abnormalities of the craniofacial region. The program provides extensive experience in intra- and extra-oral radiography, through patient contact in Special Procedures and Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology clinics in the Faculty of Dentistry. Radiation biology and physics, digital imaging, disorders of the temporomandibular joint and interpretation of images also integral components of the program.



-Research on means of diagnosis of various diseases under an active progression using the equipment maintained by the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology

-Comparison, analysis, and evaluation of recently and previously developed equipment for radiologic inspections

-Research on the relation between radiological and clinical

Services to the patients :

Patient referrals are accepted from other departments for oral and maxillofacial radiologic imaging (Intraoral and panoramic radiographic imaging). Practitioners will receive printed images and a written report of the radiologic findings.
