Overview

 The department of Pediatric dentistry was establishment in Feb, 2012. Pediatric dentistry is provided in 3 courses in 9th, 10th and 11th semesters. The students learn pediatric dental treatments and behavior management.

 

Department activities

  1. Education ---Undergraduate program in DDs

Theoretical lessons of Pediatric dentistry are presented in three semesters based on references of Pediatric dentistry:

  • Pinkham JR: Pediatric Dentistry- Infancy through Adolescence. 5th ed. Philadelphia: Elsevier Saunders; 2013.
  • McDonald RE: Dentistry for the child and adolescent. 9th ed. St. Louis: CV Mosby Co; 2011.

 

  In the first practical course, issues related to pediatric dental treatments including preventive resin restorations, cavity preparation for amalgam restorations in primary teeth, primary tooth preparation for stainless steel crowns and preparation of access cavities for pulpal treatment in primary molars are demonstrated for students on dentics and extracted and mounted primary teeth.

In the second and third practical courses, the students who have passed the first course practice the dental treatments on 5-12 year old children under the supervision of faculty members.

 

  1. Research

The research projects are focused on both clinical and basic science researches under the supervision of the academic staff of the department. The current fields that are under active investigation are community oral health, preventive dentistry, dental behavior management, dental materials and restorations  in pediatric dentistry, advances in clinical pediatric dentistry; and pulp treatment in primary teeth.

 

Services to the patients in the department

All dental treatments needed such as restorations for primary teeth, stainless steel crowns, pulp treatment in primary teeth and space maintenance are presented to pediatric patients referred to the dental school.
