Department of Emergency Medicine

We train future’s academic leaders in Emergency Medicine to firmly influence our nation-wide management of patients and to grow our specialty’s contribution to patient critical care and management internationally

 

 

The faculty members of the Department of Emergency Medicine includes 30 board-certified emergency medicine physicians, including some of the nation’s most accomplished clinicians, distinguished researchers and leaders in emergency medicine and critical care. Our faculties’ fields of interest in practice and research are wide-ranging: Critical care, acute trauma care, acute pain management, point-of-care ultrasound, ED management, medical education, simulated base education, communication skills and disaster preparedness and response.

 

Around 90 talented residents are training in our three emergency departments in 3 residency levels (which will be upgrade in to 4 years from next year). Around 25 senior medical students (interns) every month join us for their emergency medicine rotations in the three emergency departments. We are participating in undergraduate training with medical school (clerkship) recently.

 

The Department of Emergency Medicine of Tehran University of Medical Sciences was first founded in September 2004 in Imam Khomeini Complex Hospital, then branched in 2010 in Dr. Shariati Hospital and in 2014 in Sina Hospital. All three emergency departments are joined in the academic emergency medicine program. Our program is welcoming multiculturalism and accepts any foreign applicant for under and post-graduation training in emergency medicine.

 

The Department of Emergency Medicine offers a great opportunity for its trainees to visit a number of case patients from all categories and all age subgroups and actively participate in diagnosis and management of this group in collaboration with all other specialties and subspecialties departments.

 

Department of Emergency Medicine has recently published its official journal. Advanced Journal of Emergency Medicine (http://ajem.tums.ac.ir) is an international, open access, peer-reviewed, quarterly published journal with the objective of improving the quality of critical care and knowledge in emergency medicine and related specialties. The journal publishes articles on critical care, disaster, acute trauma management, environmental injuries, medical toxicology, pediatric emergency medicine, emergency medical services, emergency and point-of-care ultrasound and other related topics. Department of Emergency Medicine organized national congresses and workshops on acute trauma care, advanced airway and ventilation management and Point-of-care (POC) ultrasound annually. These congresses and workshops offers an ideal mix of traditional standard of acute care principles with new, cutting edge information and techniques for management of multiple injured patients in emergency and critical care departments. It explores issues in several areas including advance topics in critical airway management, ventilatory critical management, circulatory resuscitation, acute surgical management, neurosurgical and neurointensive management, point-of-care ultrasound, neuroimaging, patient safe transport and transfer. Targeted audiences are emergency medicine specialists, surgeons, critical care specialists and intensivists from all over the country.
