Department of Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Diseases

ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat diseases) was started as a lesson in the 5th year of the foundation of the School of Medicine in 1928. After more than a decade, a university hospital was organized to have specific focus on this field by changing the Women’s Hospital to Amir Alam Hospital (a specific ENT hospital) in 1943. After that, in 1949, ENT teaching activities upgraded to a teaching unit as a part of total 38 units of the medical school in Tehran University and by growing the science of otolaryngology and progression of the surgical sciences to subspecialties, ENT unit had been changed to ENT department in 1970, and its activities distributed in 4 hospitals (Amir Alam, Pahlavi [that changed later to Imam Khomeini], Farabi, Razi). After several years, ENT educational system was organized in Amir Alam Hospital and Valiasr Hospital (as a part of Imam Khomeini Hospital Complex). While the pediatric otolaryngology emerged as a new subspecialty in the world, a pediatric ENT ward started its activities in Children’s Medical Center as a subunit of the Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery.

29 attending physicians in various levels and specialties are working in this department which are distributed in three mentioned university hospitals. Organizing the international congresses and educational and specifically hands-on courses (such as Temporal bone dissection course) and participation in the international congresses and workshops as invited speakers are the main international activities.

All undergraduate medical students of the university have one-month educational program at the ENT department before the internship and two weeks in the internship period. In addition, 44 postgraduate students are currently studying at the level of ENT specialty (which 2 of them are international students) and 7 have practice as fellowships in various subspecialties. Moreover, there is a six-month hands-on course of facial plastic surgery that accepts two participants yearly.
