Three part mission of the Department of Radiation Oncology is cancer patients care, cancer research, and the education of Radiation Oncology residents, medical, Radiotherapy and physic students.
The Department of Radiation Oncology offers a broad range of radiation and systemic therapy services to cancer patients, including External Beam Radiotherapy (EBRT), High-Dose Rate (HDR) brachytherapy, chemotherapy, hormone and targeted therapy. The department is equipped with three linear accelerators and one high dose rate (cobalt 60) brachytherapy machines.
Research programs of the department are focused on assessment of new treatment approaches, novel drugs, and treatment side effects, physics of radiotherapy, radiobiology, dosimetry, and animal studies. The department is also hosting the Radiation Oncology Research Center (RORC) that was established in 2014 and affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences.
The five-year residency program in radiation oncology department includes education of internal medicine, principles of oncology, and principles of radiotherapy, physics of radiotherapy, radiobiology and principles of systemic therapy. Effective teaching of residents by its faculty is a priority and is emphasized as an important component of academic life at Radiation Oncology Department. The residents leave the program with important skills that allow them to function independently as radiation oncologists in academic or private practice.
